“Chaos Erupts at I-25 Rivalry Game: Fights and Flying Beer Cans at NMSU vs. UNM”

The Battle of I-25 between New Mexico State University (NMSU) and the University of New Mexico turned chaotic over the weekend, with disorder breaking out both inside and outside the stadium.

A viral video from the rivalry game shows hundreds of beer cans being hurled through the air at a tailgate, while attendees scrambled for cover. But the chaos wasn’t confined to the tailgating area.

Inside the stadium, another video captured a fight between two men in the stands, which resulted in a woman being knocked to the ground as bystanders attempted to break up the altercation. These are just a few examples of the numerous videos circulating online.

NMSU Police are now asking game attendees to submit any video evidence to assist in their investigation.

NMSU’s police department released a list of incidents from the game:

  • 10 ejections for violations including public fights, disorderly conduct, intoxication, and public nuisance.
  • Multiple medical calls and transports.
  • Two arrests and one criminal summons for disorderly conduct, possession of a controlled substance, and minor in possession.
  • Several public fights where the involved parties refused to press charges, resulting in ejections or separations.
  • Various non-traffic citations for public fights and criminal trespass.

Despite increased security measures at the game, the situation spiraled out of control, raising questions about whether more restrictions are necessary.

In 2007, UTEP faced similar issues and temporarily banned tailgating after a particularly rowdy football season. The ban was lifted in 2008 with new regulations, including alcohol restrictions, designated tailgating zones, and a stronger police presence.

NMSU has been contacted to see if any discussions about banning on-campus tailgating are underway, and the university is working to provide answers.
